A prep school in Nevada founded by Andre Agassi is currently facing a lawsuit from their former biology teacher who alleges that he was treated badly and was fired because he is black.
The lawsuit for racism allegations was filed by James Holmes Jr, who claims he was hired to teach 9th and 10th grade biology at Andre Agassi College Prep Academy in 2005. Holmes says he was singled out because of his color and suffered prejudicial treatment. According to the lawsuit, his problems began in 2008 after the school hired a new principal who allegedly favored white teachers, making the role of James Holmes Jr. increasingly marginalized.
Additionally, the former biology teacher says he was not permitted to travel to a science conference, but the other white teachers were allowed to go. James Holmes Jr. later discovered that the school head did have funds reserved for other teachers who wanted to attend conferences. He also claims the new principal of Andre Agassi College Prep Academy denied his request for new lab materials due to budget restraints but he later found out the lab materials were ordered for two white teachers instead.
Moreover, the lawsuit says James Holmes Jr. filed a complaint with the school, but the officials sacked him instead and replaced him with a substitute elementary school teacher who was not certified to teach science courses.
James Holmes Jr. is demanding at least $75k in damages from Andre Agassi College Prep Academy. However, Andre Agassi himself is not personally named in the lawsuit.
The former Wimbledon champion Agassi, 41, opened the Andre Agassi College Prep Academy in 2001. The tuition-free school recruits at risk children in the Las Vegas area. Reports say it has one of the best graduation rates among schools in the state of Vegas. The school has been such a success that Andre Agassi is considering opening other academies across the US.
A spokesman for the academy said, “We will aggressively defend the suit because the case is baseless and without any merit.”
