TV icon Andy Griffith has reportedly died at the age of 86 at his home in Roanoke Island, Dare County, North Carolina on Tuesday.

According to reports, the body of Andy Griffith was buried on Tuesday morning — just less than five hours after he died. He was known as an actor who won over audiences for years due to his folksy appeal, especially in “The Andy Griffith Show.”

According to a funeral spokesperson who declined to be named, citing the sensitivity of the matter, the family of Griffith requested that his body be lowered into a grave on the island at about 11:30 in the morning on Tuesday.

“It had been planned for some time,” said the spokesperson, who also declined to reveal where on the island the body of the TV personality was buried. “This was the wish of his family.”

Griffith, who was popularly known for his role as the sheriff of mayberry on the CBS series, “The Andy Griffith Show,” succumbed to an unspecified illness and “has been laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island,” his family said in a statement.

According to some observers, the speed with which the public learned about his death and of his burial seemed to be really fast.

Larry F. Stegall, executive director of the state’s Funeral Directors Association said, “It’s not very common. I don’t recall having heard of it, and I’ve been here 32 years.”

Traditional funeral customs often allow an extended period between death and burial, so the family and friends of the deceased can have more opportunity to visit and pay their respects.

But still, Stegall said, “the family’s wishes are always abided by.”

“Andy was a person of incredibly strong Christian faith and was prepared for the day he would be called Home to his Lord,” Cindi, Griffith’s wife said in a statement on Tuesday.

Aside from being a member of the Television Hall of Fame, Andy Griffith was also inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame and Museum back in 2007. His 1996 album, “I Love to Tell the Story — 25 Timeless Hymns” won him a Grammy award.

Andy Griffith was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina in 1926 and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina in 1949 at Chapel Hill, where he received a degree in music.
