R&B/pop singer El DeBarge denies the allegations emerging about his arrest last week due to suspicion of drug possession. The singer wants to clear his name once and for all, saying that the police made a big mistake when they arrested him last week.

TMZ was able to speak with Spencer Vodnoy, a lawyer for the DeBarge family, who said, “The family said they were relieved to hear that no charges will be filed against El,” adding, “A the end of the day the truth appears to have prevailed and I am sure he will be getting back to work on his career, his health and happiness.”

As previous reports have stated, El DeBarge and another man was busted by undercover narcotics near a freeway interchange in Los Angeles. El DeBarge was eventually arrested and booked for drug possession with intent to sell, but the charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence. Following El DeBarge’s arrest, he was booked at a jail for suspicion of drug possession and was later released on $30,000 bond. The singer, who has spoken publicly about his drug-addiction problems in the past, faces a court date in April.

The Los Angeles County D.A has reportedly declined to file charges against the 50-year-old singer. According to official D.A. documents, the drug case was rejected due to insufficient evidence. As previous reports have stated, El DeBarge and another man were seen acting suspiciously by undercover narcotics who were conducting an investigation near White Oak Avenue and the 101 Freeway. When the officers approached the two men, they recovered narcotics near the area where the singer had been standing.

El DeBarge, real name Eldra Patrick DeBarge, was then booked on suspicion of drug possession, but was later released from custody after posting $30,000 bail. The singer and the other man, Curtis Freeman, denied any wrongdoing at the time of their arrest.

His run-in with the law on Monday is the latest addition to El DeBarge’s drug-related arrest since 2001.

Spencer Vodnoy, the attorney of El DeBarge said he was skeptical about the drug-related arrest and initial booking charge of possession for sale given his client’s struggle with drug use.

“The DeBarge family is very close knit and have had their struggles with substance abuse,” Vodnoy said, adding “They will do what they always have done, which is to support their sibling through this.”

According to the reports, undercover narcotics officers were conducting an investigation near White Oak Avenue and the 101 Freeway early Monday when they spotted the 50-year-old El DeBarge and another man acting suspiciously, said LAPD spokeswoman Norma Eisenman. Officers recovered narcotics from an area where DeBarge had been standing, Eisenman added.

The singer was then booked on suspicion of possession for sale of drugs. and was later released on a $30,000 bail. This is the third time El DeBarge has been arrested for drug possession since 2001. The other man to whom El DeBarge was dealing with, Curtis Freeman, was also arrested on suspicion of attempted drug possession.

Spencer Vodnoy, the singer’s attorney said he was doubtful about the initial booking charge of possession for sale given his client’s struggle with drug use.

“The DeBarge family is very close knit and have had their struggles with substance abuse,” Vodnoy said. “They will do what they always have done, which is to support their sibling through this.”

El DeBarge is best known for the Grammy-winning song “Rhythm of the Night” in the mid-1980s as part of his family’s group DeBarge.

The singer’s brother, James, is currently serving jail time after being arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and drug possession.
