Nas, Kelis: “We’re trying not to hate each other”

Rapper Nas and estranged wife Kelis are both trying to bury the hatchet following their bitter divorce battle — in fact, the two are reportedly trying to forge a friendship — and Nas says it’s all for their son.

According to previous reports, R&B singer Kelis filed for divorce from Nas back in April 2009, and their split was bitter and nasty. The couple fought non-stop over the custody of their son and money. Kelis said that when she was seven months pregnant, she was broke and yet, Nas declined to give her money even for her medical expenses.

But now, Nas said that he and Kelis are trying to put the past behind them so they will be able to develop a healthy relationship for the good of their three-year-old son Knight — but that they are not reuniting romantically.

The rapper added that they have been on good terms for quite some time now, and he hopes it will continue. Nas and Kelis even went out for dinner on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

Sources report that an eyewitness spotted Kelis watching a show in LA on Tuesday evening, and Nas was allegedly sitting beside her, attempting to go incognito. “I knew I had to meet Kelis so we waited for the show to end and then we moved back down to where she was sitting … Kelis began walking out and then when I looked back, Nas pulled his fishermans hat down and tried to walk out quickly. So I yelled out, “hey Nasty Nas” and he just smiled and walked by.”

Last month, the rap veteran talked about their relationship with his Kelis-targeted “Bye Baby” music video. As Nas continues promoting his most personal album to date entitled “Life Is Good,” fans finally get visuals to his tell-all track about the downfall of his relationship with Kelis. In the clip, Nas dramatizes their whole divorce drama from his point of view, starting with finding all of Kelis’ things gone from their home — except for a piece of her wedding dress. Nas then begins to reflect on their relationship over cognac while watching the wedding footage. Even though the rapper spends most of the track reminiscing on his failed marriage before signing over half of his fortune, he ends it on a positive note by saying that he still believes in love.

Back in June, the rapper’s former wife discussed his decision to feature her wedding gown on the new “Life Is Good” cover.

“My feelings about it are not really relevant, but you know at the end of the day Nas is an artist. And for whatever it’s worth he’s one of the greatest, and especially for what it is he does,” Kelis said. “So for me, I feel like especially for someone in hip-hop to kind of be genuine and honest, whatever the honesty is about, I think it’s awesome. So my feelings about it aren’t really necessarily valid, it’s just the fact that as an artist I can respect that he wears his feelings on his sleeve.”
