Interested in acquiring a painting made with the blood of ex-Libertines singer Pete Doherty? Or, if it catches your fancy, one made with the blood of the late Amy Winehouse? According to The Huffington Post, Doherty will hold an art auction at the Cob Gallery in London later this week.
Going on the auction block are his private diaries, guitars, clothing, other personal items, and a slew of paintings smeared with his own blood.
U.K. paper The Independent reported that the Pete Doherty blood paintings will sell for more than $15,000. And the collection’s crown jewel is ‘Ladylike: A self-portrait of of fellow singer and close friend Amy Winehouse, painted using Winehouse’s blood and expected to sell from $80,000 up to $129,000.
Earlier, Pete Doherty held a 10-day exhibition of his work back in February. He displayed twenty blood paintings and prints, of which more than 15 were snapped up. The February exhibition also displayed ’Ladylike,’ but the piece did not go on auction at the time because of its “personal nature.”
Doherty shared with The Independent that, “Amy was on the phone to her dad when she did that ['Ladylike']. She said, ‘Dad, I’m with Pete and he’s making me draw with my blood!’” he quoted her before quipping: “He didn’t like me much, her dad.”
Often rumored to be more than just close friends with Pete Doherty, Amy Winehouse told Rolling Stone in an interview that, “We’re just good friends.”
She added, “I asked Pete to do a concept EP, and he made this face, he looked at me like I’d pooed on the floor. He wouldn’t do it,” Amy Winehouse shared. “We’re just really close”.
An April interview with NME saw Pete Doherty admitting that he was “wallowing in his own filth” during the death and burial of Amy Winehouse.
“When Amy died,” he shared, “I was sat in a matchbox room in Camden Town, not able to leave, basically wallowing in my own filth. Literally knee-deep in sh*t,” Doherty stated. “Literally not able to move.”
Pete Doherty continued that, “I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t see anyone, I couldn’t pick up the guitar and when I did pick up the guitar it was woeful ballads about how Amy wouldn’t be coming round tonight. It wasn’t a very inspiring time,” he stated.
Amy Winehouse died of accidental alcohol poisoning on July 2011.
