Tom Hanks is currently in hot water after a video of him shows the actor emceeing in an event at the private St. Matthew’s Parish School in Pacific Palisades, where a white guy with a blackface, in the person of Eagle vocalist Glenn Frey, shared the stage with him.
According to the reports, the shocking footage shows a fellow parent – whom the Daily Caller identified as an investment banker named Glenn Frey – dressed in what apparently was his interpretation of an African tribal costume, complete with a blackface. Here’s what Tom Hanks has to say about the blackface controversy:
“For many years I emceed the annual fundraising auction for my kids’ school,” 55-year-old Tom Hanks said in a statement. “In 2004, I was blindsided when one of the parents [Glenn Frey] got up on the stage in a costume that was hideously offensive then and is hideously offensive now. What is usually a night of food and drink for a good cause was, regrettably, marred by an appalling few moments.”
“It is St. Matthew’s Parish School’s policy not to comment on any press inquiries regarding fundraisers or other school events,” a rep for the school told the Daily Caller.
Actor Tom Hanks cracked some jokes during the event, but none as offensive as those made by the man with the blackface, Eagles musician Glenn Frey, who said, “This is as close to diversity as we’ll get at St. Matthew’s.”
