Controversial show ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ faces a new critic: None other than former 1983 Miss America Vanessa Williams.
According to E! News, Miss Williams appeared on an upcoming episode of ‘Anderson.’ Host Anderson Cooper asks the ‘Desperate Housewives’ actress if she believes the kids are being forced into appearing on the ‘Toddlers & Tiaras,’ where they are made to wear racy outfits and perform suggestive numbers.
“I think they don’t know what they are doing,” Vanessa Williams answers. ”But when the child is screaming and saying, ‘I don’t want to do this, I don’t feel like doing it’—when they are using special juice to get them hyped…”
“Go-go juice,” Anderson Cooper identifies a supposed mix of Mountain Dew and 7UP that parents give the girls to instill a confidence for their appearance on TV.
“Yeah, that’s not my world,” Vanessa Williams -the mother of four children- continues, “and I would never have my kids do that.”
In 1983, Vanessa Williams made history as the first black woman to be proclaimed Miss America. However, she was dethroned after scandalous nude photos of her appeared.
In her recently-published memoir, ‘You Have No Idea,’ the former Miss America revealed that she had been sexually molested as a ten-year-old child and went through an abortion during high school.
Vanessa Williams joins the growing army of ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ critics. Back in March, John Ramsey -the father of JonBenét Ramsey- called the show “very bizarre” and said he regretted allowing his late daughter to participate in child beauty pageants. Media outlets have also labeled T&T contestants as “prosti-tots.”
Vanessa Williams: “I was molested as a child”

“Desperate Housewives” actress Vanessa Williams admitted that she was molested when she was just ten years old, which she claims led her to become “highly sexualized” at an abnormally young age.
In her new book “You Have No Idea,” 49-year-old Vanessa Williams reveals secrets about her childhood. One of them was being molested by an 18-year-old girl when she was just ten years old, while they were on a family trip with friends.
“It was definitely a choice, because it didn’t need to be [in the book],” Williams recalled of being molested. “It happened one night where she told me, ‘come over here,’… I didn’t know that it was wrong, but I knew that it wasn’t right because I wasn’t supposed to tell anybody.”
Vanessa Williams said that at the time she was molested, it was difficult for her to understand what had happened and she kept it a secret for years. It was not until many years later, when she was in college, that she realized the significance of her experience of being molested.
“I think I was highly sexualized because I was in fifth grade and I had this experience,” Vanessa Williams told “Nightline.” “Because it feels good, you’re like, OK, well this is supposed to be normal. That’s not normal for a 10-year-old to be seduced.”
Williams said she didn’t tell her mother about being molested, not until they wrote the book together. Helen Williams said she was “absolutely stunned” to find out that her daughter was molested.
“[I] had no idea that, that had happened,” Helen Williams said of Vanessa being molested. “But in retrospect, it kind of put into place some of her reactions during her pre-teen years.”
Mother-of-four Vanessa Williams said she first got pregnant when she was in high school, but decided to have an abortion. This was another secret she kept from her mother.“Being pregnant is the most frightening thing that happens in your life,” the actress said. “I knew in high school that’s something that I was not prepared to do, or fight, or struggle with.”
But now, Vanessa Williams is focused on moving forward saying, “I’ve learned to embrace my past. I embrace the choices that I have been given in my life.”
